    $30,000 is the fine for working silica without M-class extraction. The class rating describes how much dust an extractor is allowed to pass back into the air, so it is a compliance specification rather than a performance one. An L-class unit or a workshop vacuum will move the visible dust, but it is not rated to capture the particles that do the damage. Requirements vary by state, by material and by how long the task runs, so check the Safe Work requirements that apply where you are working.
