I've heard a lot about the DOMINO. What makes it so special compared to other joinery methods?
The DOMINO JOINER system is recognized as a staple product for its strength and repeatability saving time when completing joinery applications. It provides a stable, non-rotational joint and the available system accessories allow you to complete more applications and speed up delivery time.
How much stronger is a DOMINO joint compared to a biscuit or a regular dowel? Does the oval shape really stop it from twisting?
Superior Joint Strength: The dowels' oval shape provides maximum stability, making the joint 100% rotation-proof... as the dominos are compressed solid timber they are much stronger than standard round dowels or flat biscuits.
I'm building an outdoor table. Will the DOMINO dowels swell up with moisture and ruin the joint like biscuits can?
Hardwood DOMINOs are recommended for outdoor use (do not use Beech DOMINOs for external use) and will not take in moisture or swell (unlike biscuits), preventing uneven distortion in joints for outdoor timber tables.
Is the DOMINO joiner safer than a biscuit joiner? I'm always worried about kickback.
Safety: The unique drilling and oscillating (pendulum) principle means there is no chance of kickback, unlike biscuit joiners.
How does the DOMINO cut the slot? Does the cutter get hot or leave burn marks on the wood?
Pendulum Milling Principle: The patented motion creates a precise, oval-shaped slot... prevents the router from overheating, leading to an extremely long tool life and holes without scorch marks.
Do I need to buy different types of dowels if I’m working on an outdoor project?
Dowel Materials: Beech dowels are for interior applications; Sipo Mahogany dowels are weatherproof, insect, and mould-resistant for exterior/moisture-prone applications.
I'm trying to decide between the DOMINO models. What kinds of projects is the cordless DFC 500 best for?
Primary Use: Best value for the majority of Shop Fitting, Furniture and Cabinetry businesses, excelling in thinner material for panels, drawer sides, small boxes, and household furniture (tables, chairs, chests). As a cordless tool the DFC 500 DOMINO Joiner is also recommended on site where power may not always be easily available. The DF 700 Domino is best for larger materials like beds, tables and doors.
What's the smallest cutter size I can use with the Cordless DFC 500/DF 500 DOMINO Joiner?
The DFC 500 can use smaller cutters like 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm.
What is the absolute largest dowel the Cordless DFC 500 DOMINO Joiner can handle?
Maximum Dowel Size: Supports up to 10 mm x 50 mm DOMINO tenons.
How deep can the cordless DFC 500/DF 500 DOMINO Joiner cut, and are the depth settings adjustable?
The DFC 500/DF 500 features fixed depth stops at 12, 15, 20, 25, and 28 mm. (Max depth 28mm)
How many indexing pins does the DFC 500 have?
Indexing Pins: The Cordless DFC 500 DOMINO Joiner has two integrated stops/pins, while the corded DF 700 has three.
I see the cordless DFC 500 DOMINO joiner has a D-handle. Why was that added?
Handle: The new cordless model incorporates a spade handle (D-handle), previously only found on the DF 700 Joiner, allowing users to apply more pressure directly behind the tool for better control.
How many holes can I realistically expect to cut on a single 4 Ah battery using the DFC 500 Joiner? And is the cordless version slower than the corded one?
Cordless Power & Runtime: Milling speed is slightly slower at 18500 rpm. A 4 Ah battery can mill approximately 270 holes (8 mm cutter at 20 mm depth in pine).
How much does the Cordless DFC 500 DOMINO Joiner weigh? Is it easy to handle?
Weight (without Battery): Approximately 3.4kg, making it lighter and more agile than the 700 XL. The tool is well balanced as well, even when using larger batteries, one handed operation is still comfortable.
I build large projects like beds, thick doors, and pergolas. Is the DF 500 / DFC 500 DOMINO joiner tool suitable for me, or do I need the DF 700 XL?
Primary Use: The DF 500/DFC 500 covers most joinery applications with the 4mm-10mm thick Domino dowels. The DF 700 is designed for large-scale projects requiring deeper, thicker, more structural joints, such as beds, doors, full-sized tables, slabs of wood, and large structural external joinery (e.g., pergolas).
What cutter sizes does the DF 700 XL Joiner use?
Cutter Sizes: Can use larger cutters: 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, and 14 mm.
What is the biggest tenon the DF 700 XL Joiner can make?
Maximum Dowel Size: Supports massive tenons up to 14 mm x 140 mm.
How deep can the DF 700 XL Joiner cut, and are the depth stops variable?
Depth Stops: Features a variable routing depth setting from 15 mm to 70 mm (in 5 mm increments)
How much heavier is the DF 700 XL compared to the smaller DF 500 Joiner?
Weight: The DF 700 XL Joiner is 5.2 kg so is a larger machine than the DF 500 Joiner
I see a 'tight' and 'loose' setting on all of the DOMINO joiner tools. Why would I ever want to cut a 'loose' joint?
Tight vs. Loose Joinery: The Mortise Width/Lateral Play settings allow the user to make the first mortise "Tight" and subsequent mortises "Loose". This means over a series of joins slight tolerances can be absorbed without allowing the finished join to move.
What accessories are available for working on narrow pieces or round stock? And do you do furniture connectors?
Accessories: The system is supported by Trim Stops, Cross Stops and Round Stops. A Connecting System that can be repeatedly assembled and unassembled is available. Search for Joiner Connectors on the Festool Australia website.
Q: Are the cross-stops for the DF 500 / 700 intercompatible?
Yes, but you will need to flip the stop. The DF 500 is 10mm from base to centre, while the DF 700 is 15mm.
Can DF 500 joiner cutters be used on the DF 700?
No, DF 500 cutters are not compatible with the DF 700.
Can DF 700 cutters be used on the DF 500?
No, DF 700 cutters cannot be used on the DF 500. They have different thread sizes and are longer due to the extra plunge depth.
Can I use the 15mm drilling template for my DF 700?
No, the 15mm drilling template (part number 203164) is only compatible with the DF 500.
Can I use the DF 500 cutters on my DF 700?
No, the cutters have different threads and cannot be fitted to each other.
Can the 750mm long dominos available in 8mm and 10mm also be used for the DF 500?
Yes, since the DF 500 uses 8mm and 10mm cutters, the longer 750mm dominoes can be cut to length to suit the DF 500.
Can the 8mm and 10mm long dominos be used with DF 500 as well as the DF 700?
Yes, both machines support 8mm and 10mm cutters, so the longer dominoes can be cut to length for use with the DF 500.
Has Festool got corner connectors for the DF 500?
Yes, Festool offers a corner connector for the DF 500, suitable for material from 18mm to 28mm.
How to fix a DF 700 when the cutter is jammed?
Do not overtighten the cutter when fitting. The cutter naturally tightens during use. If jammed, use a 10mm spanner to hold the spindle while loosening the cutter with another spanner. This reduces stress on the spindle lock. If the cutter cannot be removed, contact Festool service.
Is a dust extractor needed when using the Domino DF 500/700?
Yes, a dust extractor should always be used. Without it, the mortise can clog with dust, reducing cutter lifespan and posing a health hazard.
What are the width settings on the DF 500 Domino?
The DF 500 has three width settings:
Standard: tight tolerance, just the width of the tenon
Middle: 6mm wider
Largest: 10mm tolerance
When should I choose the DF 500 Domino or DF 700 Domino?
Use the DF 500 for small to medium materials. It’s lighter and more maneuverable.
Use the DF 700 for thicker materials and larger applications, if you’re comfortable with the extra size and weight.
Why do I need a Domino when I am using a connector (DF 700)?
Using a standard Domino tenon with the corner connector eliminates rotational movement and adds structural strength to the joint.
Why is my DF 500/700 Domino cutting slots at an angle?
This can happen due to cutter rotation causing flex in the tool. To fix it:
Plunge slower with hard timber or dull cutters
Plunge faster with soft timber or sharp cutters
